Academic Programmes

CDPS runs MA, MPhil and PhD programme in population related subjects like fertility, mortality, migration, nuptiality, employment, worst forms of child labour, trafficking, social justice, gender, poverty and reproductive health.

The CDPS is currently running following programmes:
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Population Studies

    The post-graduate Diploma programme is run for ten month as and when the demand from the Government and NGOs prevails at the cost recovery basis. The courses are tailored on immediate requirement as a self terminating programme as well as a pre-requisite to Master of Arts in Population Studies. As and when necessary, admission to the post graduate programme is open to Bachelor's Degree holders who have had Population Studies as a major subject and to Master's Degree holders in Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Mathematics, Statistics and other selected science subjects with an adequate quantitative background.

  • Master of Arts in Population Studies

    CDPS offers Master of Arts (MA) in Population Studies. To acquire this degree a student has to pass ten courses including thesis offered by the department in two academic years.

    CDPS has revised and updated the existing courses taught since 2000. The MA courses also build upon the advanced level courses at the Master of Philosophy in Population Studies being introduced in 2007. Some new courses have been introduced such as gender, poverty, human development, Millennium Development Goals and their interrelationships with population dynamics. Internal assessment has been introduced.

    The MA courses are divided into two parts: Part I for the First Year and Part II for the Second Year. There are ten courses, each carrying 100 marks.

    • Admission Requirements
    • Students seeking admission to the MA Course in Population Studies should have passed the Bachelor's Level preferably with a major in Population Studies. Students with Bachelor's degree in relevant social

      science disciplines may be eligible for admission by passing the entrance examination.

      The CDPS attempts to provide short-term training on the applications of micro-computer to the students during their second academic year in order to facilitate their thesis work. This provision is entirely based on cost recovery and time basis.

  • Master of Philosophy in Population Studies
    • Introduction

      Central Department of Population Studies (CDPS) was established by Tribhuvan University Council in AD 1988 in order to run a full programme of Master of Arts (MA) in Population Studies. CDPS has updated MA courses in Population Studies in 2006. Beginning from AD 2008, it has introduced Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Population Studies in order to train manpower in Demography at a higher level as a prerequisite to Doctor of Philosophy in Population Studies. MPhil courses range from technical demography at an advanced level to emerging socio-economic issues in the contemporary World. Such topics include, Human Development, Gender, Poverty, Reproductive Health, MGDs, Environment, Migration and Urbanization, Ageing, Applied and Business Demography, Adolescents, Youth and HIV/AIDS, Population and Conflict Resolution, Political Demography, Family and Household Demography, Global, Regional National Approach to Population Policies and Advanced Use of Internet in Demographic Research.

    • Objectives

      The MPhil courses emphasize training in methodological, theoretical and empirical aspects of population research with multi-disciplinary focus.

    • Admission Criteria

      Prospective students of MPhil must have possessed MA in Population Studies or Demography with at least first division from either Tribhuvan University (TU) or from other Universities recognized by TU. Students are admitted by screening through an entrance examination.

    • Courses and Credit Hours

      There are altogether 17 courses of Population Studies at the MPhil level. Of these, four courses of five credit hours each are offered respectively in the first and in the second semester. Students have to submit a comprehensive research based thesis of ten credit hours in the third semester upon successful completion of semester courses.

      The Central Department of Population Studies has proposed 8 courses for MPhil programme, each consisting of 5 credit hours. The duration of the programme will be three semesters. Each of the first and the second semester will be devoted to teaching 20 credit hour courses. The third semester will be devoted to preparing thesis with 10 credit hours.

  • In-service Training Programme

    This programme is designed to provide short-term training to the government and non-government employees working in population related areas such as:
    • Basic concepts and principles of demography,
    • Basic tools and techniques of demographic data collection and analysis, and
    • Population policy issues.
  • Research/Seminar

    This programme is designed to institutionalize research activities in the department and to organize national or international seminars. At present, CDPS has adequate computer facilities and a library containing more than 10,000 books and professional journals. CDPS anticipates further growth of library facilities.

  • Faculty Development Programme

    This programme is designed to develop professional skills of the faculty members and to establish linkage with other national and international institutions. Under this programme, depending upon available funds, faculty members may go abroad for
    • Short-term training,
    • Higher study leading to another MA or a PhD in Demography,
    • Establishing linkage with international institutions, and
    • Presenting seminar papers.
